(holding hands with partner in an alternating motion to the beat )
Step back Sally, Sally, Sally,
Step back Sally, all night long
(4 steps, forward and back)
I looked down the alley and what did I see? (turn to look down an "alley")
A big ol' man from Tennessee (hands on waist)
I bet you five dollars I can beat that man,
I bet you five dollars I can beat that man.
(motion "five" with your hand pulsing the beat)
To the front, to the back, to the sa sa side
(face partner and jump forward, back, and side to side)
To the front, to the back, to the sa sa side. (repeat)
There are many versions of this African American song. I learned this version over a decade ago while I was teaching music.. My students have always loved the actions to this song, particularly the jumping part at the end. I recently found a similar version with a great video and educational resources from PBS. Check it out...
